Dr. Irwin Brown is an Associate Professor in the Department of Information Systems at the University of Cape Town. He is the Section Head responsible for research in the Department, and acting Deputy Director of the Centre for IT and National Development in Africa (CITANDA). CITANDA is the research arm of the department. His research interests relate to strategic planning for information systems, ICT innovations, the use of ICT for innovation, and information systems in a developing country context. Dr. Brown has published widely in journals such as the International Journal of Information Management, Journal of Global Information Management, Communications of the AIS, and Electronic Journal of Information Systems in Developing Countries. He has also presented papers at international conferences such as the Australasian Conference on Information Systems.

Dr. Brown completed his undergraduate degree in Engineering at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare, his Masters in IS at Curtin University of Technology, Australia, and his PhD entitled "Espoused Theory versus Theory In Use: The Case of Strategic Information Systems Planning" at the University of Cape Town in 2005. He has worked around the globe, including stints while at Curtin in Australia and then Polytechnic of Namibia. He joined the University of Cape Town in July 2000 and has taught a variety of undergraduate and post-graduate courses. He is currently involved in the Part-time Honours and Masters programmes and has done lots of exciting research. Dr. Brown has been recognised as an established researcher by the South African National Research Foundation (NRF). He is also the South African national representative on the IFIP TC8 (Information Systems). He is the IS Sub-Editor of the South African Computer Journal.
